When we talk about “growing as a disciple,” it’s easy to jump straight into practices like prayer, Bible study, or serving others. But before we focus on what we do, we must first understand who we are. A firm grasp of our identity in Christ—sometimes called our position in Christ—is the first foundation for all true spiritual growth.

The Bible makes it clear that when we place our faith in Jesus, something remarkable happens:

  • We are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • We are children of God (John 1:12).
  • We are forgiven and free from condemnation (Romans 8:1).
  • We are citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20)

These truths are not about how we feel on any given day. They are about what God has declared to be true of us because of Christ’s finished work on the cross. Our position is secure, not because of our performance, but because of His grace.

Too often, Christians live as though they are still defined by their past mistakes, their present struggles, or the labels others have placed on them. But the gospel says otherwise: Your truest identity is found in Christ, not in your failures, successes, or circumstances.

As disciples, the more deeply we root ourselves in these truths, the more freedom we will experience. When we live out of our identity in Christ, obedience flows from love rather than fear, service flows from gratitude rather than obligation, and growth becomes joyful rather than burdensome.

In the following few postings, we will explore the concept of sanctification, which involves our growth as Christians. We will begin with some foundations, and it begins here for a reason: until you know who you are in Christ, you will always struggle with what it means to follow Him. So let me ask you—do you see yourself the way God sees you?

Take a moment to reflect on this truth: In Christ, you are fully accepted, deeply loved, and eternally secure.
